Acne is one of the most common skin problems. Secondary acne scarring is very frequent and despite appropriate medical treatment, it can affect up to 95% of patients. One third of acne patients can show severe scarring.

Acne scars can have a deep impact on self-esteem, but it is reassuring to know that effective treatment options exist.

Scar types and appropriate treatments

There are two broad categories of acne scars and there is a wide array of treatments that can be recommended according to scar type.

The methods used to attenuate atrophic scars include dermabrasion, ablative & non-ablative laser, radio frequency, filler injections, etc. It is recommended to consult with a dermatologist who will assess and propose the most suitable treatment for you.

The usual treatments to help flatten hypertrophic scars are: intralesional steroid injections, cryotherapy, silicone gel dressings. Again, it is suggested to first get advice from a dermatologist.

✅ Prevention

Even though there are many available options when it comes to correcting acne scars, preventing the development of scars with an appropriate medical treatment is by far the best approach. It means seeking medical treatment at the onset of acne symptoms: e.g. topical medication, oral antibiotics, hormonal treatment, Accutane.
